Captain Smit Machchhar of India is being praised for having helped to prevent what could have been a major aviation disaster after he was attacked inside the cockpit of a Flydubai passenger plane en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. When the Boeing 737 began to drop thousands of feet during the struggle, the passengers and the crew managed to get into the cockpit, held back the co-pilot and allowed other Flydubai pilots who were on board to safely redirect the aircraft to Saudi Arabia. The reason for the attack is still under investigation.
What started as a regular Flydubai flight on September 30 soon turned into a life-threatening emergency for the 174 people on board Flight FZ1073.
When the flight was leaving Dubai for Tel Aviv, the first officer attacked the captain, Machchhar, in the cockpit and as a result the aircraft began a sudden and steep descent, according to Israeli authorities and the passengers’ accounts.
What Happened on Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
While the aircraft was flying at a height of more than 30,000 feet, the passengers suddenly noticed it dropping sharply.
Reuters, according to officials, stated that the jet decreased its altitude by almost 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds in the first emergency. The passenger Almog Italie said that he had at first felt as if he were experiencing severe turbulence before realising that something much more serious was going on near the cockpit.
According to a report by the Associated Press, based on data from Flightradar24, the aircraft decreased its altitude from about 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet within approximately a minute as part of the overall descent. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 then stabilized and eventually proceeded towards Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The precise order is still the subject of the investigations, but the officials and witnesses generally agree that a violent clash within the cockpit caused the emergency.
How Captain Smit Machchhar Helped Passengers Reach the Cockpit
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national from Mumbai, suffered serious injuries in the attack.
Israeli authorities told Reuters that even though he was injured Machchhar was able to set in motion the device which released the cockpit door, enabling the passengers and the crew to get in and overcome the co-pilot.
Passenger Yaniv Hayoun was one of those who took action. According to the witnesses, other passengers went forward as they realised that the aircraft was in danger and helped to hold back the attacker.
Two more Flydubai pilots who were on the aircraft at the time were then able to help in taking control of the plane and landing it safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The aircraft touched down approximately one hour after it had sent out its distress call, according to the Associated Press.
All the passengers eventually survived; Israeli emergency services noted that some of the passengers had suffered minor injuries, and Machchhar was hospitalised in Saudi Arabia and was said by the Indian Embassy to be in a stable condition.
Why is Captain Smit Machchhar being called a hero?
Machchhar has attracted wide attention since he apparently kept on trying to get the aircraft despite having suffered serious injuries.
The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his courage, and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called him a hero and credited his actions with helping save the people on board.
Machchhar has been a captain flying the Boeing 737 for about 15 years and has accumulated roughly 9,750 flight hours.
Prior to joining Flydubai in 2022 he worked for SpiceJet for over ten years and there eventually became a line training captain in charge of assisting in the training of other pilots.
It is interesting that aviation wasn’t the career he had originally planned. He had studied textile engineering with the intention of joining his family’s business before becoming interested in flying while he was studying management in Mumbai.
Who Was the Alleged Attacker?
The Israeli authorities identified the co-pilot as being from Oman, even though his name had not been made public in the first official statements.
He was detained by the Saudi authorities after the plane had landed.
The most important thing at this stage is that the motive is still unclear.
The Israeli authorities have termed the incident an obvious attempt to crash the plane, but Flydubai has asked that people not jump to conclusions regarding what caused it. Investigations by the appropriate aviation and security authorities are still ongoing.
The fact that there is a distinction is important since online assertions regarding terrorism, ideology or mental health should not be regarded as proven facts unless the investigators have produced evidence to support them.
How Serious Was the Aircraft’s Descent?
Aviation specialists cited by the AP called the recovery remarkable.
The quick descent put a great deal of aerodynamic stress on the aircraft, and the AP stated that a large part of the plane’s rudder had been damaged as a result of the incident. Previous aviation investigators believed that the remaining altitude was important since it provided those in control with sufficient opportunity to recover from the descent.
The incident therefore included much more than just a disturbance on a passenger aircraft.
For a while the flight was in a potentially catastrophic situation which involved not only a breach of cockpit security but also the aircraft suffering an extreme loss of altitude.
What Happened to the Passengers Afterward?
The passengers stayed in Saudi Arabia after the emergency landing at Tabuk while plans were being drawn up for another aircraft.
More than ten hours later they arrived at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv on a Flydubai flight which had been sent as a replacement. Passengers who had arrived in Israel said that their experience had been terrifying and in a number of cases stated that they thought they might not make it.
Flydubai then halted its flights to Israel as the authorities carried out their investigation.
What Does the Incident Mean for Aviation Security?
The aviation-security question raised by the Flydubai incident is an unusual one.
Modern cockpit doors have been made stronger specifically in order to stop unauthorised access from the passenger cabin; however, when the danger comes from inside the cockpit, the safety procedures become more complicated.
The situation has already led Israel to be moving towards more rigorous security checks for pilots who operate flights into the country.
The investigators still have to find out precisely what took place, what caused the confrontation, and whether the existing procedures were carried out.
It is already evident that the safe landing resulted from a combination of the actions of Captain Machchhar, the passengers’ intervention, the crew’s response, and the fact that there were other qualified pilots on board the flight.
For the 174 people aboard Flight FZ1073, those actions may have made the difference between a terrifying flight and a far greater tragedy.
