Manchester United have made one of their biggest moves of the summer transfer window, completing the signing of Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth up to £70 million.
At just 22, the Cameroon international arrives at Old Trafford as more than another midfield addition. United are betting on a player who combines Premier League experience with ball-winning ability, physical strength and progressive carrying qualities that could address some of the weaknesses in Michael Carrick’s midfield.
Sky Sports reports that United will pay £65 million guaranteed, with another £5 million potentially due in add-ons. Baleba has signed a five-year contract, with United holding an option to extend it for another year. The transfer has also been formally confirmed by Manchester United, whose player profile lists Baleba as having signed on August 25, 2026, with a contract running until June 2031.
For United, however, the important question is not simply how much Baleba cost. It is what he can change.
Why Manchester United Wanted Baleba
Manchester United’s pursuit was not a last-minute move. Sky Sports reports that United had tracked Baleba for roughly a year and made an enquiry during the January transfer window before returning for him this summer. Brighton’s reported valuation had previously exceeded £100 million, preventing a deal at the time.
United have now secured him for considerably less than that reported valuation. That doesn’t automatically make £70 million inexpensive. Instead, it shows the club is making a substantial long-term investment in a player it believes can become a central part of its midfield. Baleba fits that strategy particularly well because of his age. Born on January 3, 2004, he is only 22 and already has several seasons of Premier League experience behind him.
He joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and went on to make 112 appearances for the club, according to Sky Sports. United are therefore not buying an inexperienced prospect who still needs to adapt to English football. They are acquiring a young player who has already experienced the speed, physicality and tactical demands of the Premier League.
The Numbers Explain Why United See Potential
Baleba’s statistical profile provides a clearer picture of what United believe he can bring.
According to Manchester United’s official player profile, during the 2024-25 Premier League season, Baleba ranked sixth among midfielders for combined tackles and interceptions. He also ranked fourth for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. That combination is particularly interesting.
Some defensive midfielders excel at recovering possession but contribute relatively little when their team has the ball. Others can carry possession forward but offer less defensive protection. Baleba has demonstrated the potential to do both.
His numbers remained notable in 2025-26. United says he finished in the top eight per cent of Premier League players for combined tackles and interceptions and the top one per cent for second balls won. Those statistics help explain why United view him as potentially transformative rather than simply another squad midfielder.
The Quality United Have Been Missing: Midfield Dynamism
One of Baleba’s most valuable attributes is his ability to carry possession through midfield. Modern Premier League teams increasingly need midfielders capable of breaking pressure not only through passing but also by advancing with the ball themselves.
Baleba can receive possession in deeper areas, use his physical strength to protect it and carry it forward. That ability can change the geometry of an attack. Sky Sports’ assessment following the transfer similarly highlighted his suitability for United, pointing specifically to their need for greater authority in central midfield and someone capable of recovering possession in deeper areas. This is why Baleba could become particularly valuable to Carrick. He offers the possibility of adding defensive aggression without sacrificing progression.
£70 Million Still Represents a Gamble
There is another side to the transfer.
Baleba’s potential is considerable, but United are paying a substantial fee for a player whose recent performances have not always matched the heights of his breakthrough period. Sky Sports notes that his form subsequently dipped after the earlier transfer interest and describes the move as a gamble for United, despite his stylistic suitability. That distinction matters. United are not paying £70 million solely for what Baleba was last season. They are investing in what they believe he can become over the next five or six years.
The club will be hoping that Carrick and his coaching staff can develop the attributes that made Baleba one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded young midfielders. At 22, there is considerable time for that development. But a transfer fee of this size inevitably brings expectations.
An Immediate Complication: Baleba Is Injured
United fans will also have to wait before seeing their new midfielder on the pitch.
Baleba sustained an ankle injury during pre-season and is currently unavailable. Sky Sports reported when the transfer was announced that he could return around mid-September. That means United have spent heavily on a player who cannot immediately solve their midfield problems.
In isolation, signing an injured player might appear risky.But the length of Baleba’s contract changes the calculation. United are buying him for potentially six years, rather than simply the opening weeks of the 2026-27 campaign. Provided his recovery progresses as expected, a short-term absence is unlikely to define the success or failure of the transfer.

For Baleba himself, the move represents a major career step.
After completing the transfer, he described joining Manchester United as an “incredible feeling” and called United the “club of my dreams.” He also spoke positively about working with Carrick and the club’s ambitions. The comments are significant because United are not merely acquiring a talented midfielder. They are signing a player who appears strongly motivated by the move. Carrick now faces the challenge of turning that enthusiasm and potential into consistent Premier League performances.
Part of a Bigger Midfield Rebuild
Baleba is not arriving in isolation. He becomes Manchester United’s third midfield signing of the summer, following Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That tells us something important about United’s recruitment strategy. Rather than making a minor adjustment, the club is reshaping the central area of the team.
Baleba provides a different profile within those options. His defensive output, athleticism and carrying ability could give Carrick greater flexibility in how he constructs his midfield combinations. The ultimate role will become clearer once he returns from injury.

But performing for Manchester United brings a different level of scrutiny. Every performance will be examined against the transfer fee. Every difficult spell will invite questions about whether United overpaid.
That is the reality accompanying a deal potentially worth £70 million. Yet Baleba’s age gives United something valuable: time. If he develops into one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders over the next several seasons, the transfer could ultimately look very different from its initial price tag.
