Five people were killed and 30 others injured after a passenger bus collided with a truck on National Highway 39 in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, prompting a major rescue operation and compensation for affected families.

The accident occurred near Badwar in the Gurh police station area, around 30 kilometres from Rewa district headquarters, when a private passenger bus collided with a heavy truck on National Highway 39. Police officials said the impact caused both vehicles to overturn, with the bus leaving the road and falling into a roadside ditch or water-filled drain.
Five Dead, 30 Injured
Early reports varied over the number of people injured, with some authorities initially putting the figure at around 20. Later information attributed to Additional Superintendent of Police Bhavana Maravi put the number at 30 injured, alongside five confirmed deaths.
This makes “five dead, 30 injured” the better figure to use based on the latest police-linked reporting available.
The injured were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa, where arrangements were expanded to accommodate those brought in following the crash. Officials also reserved additional hospital beds in case more patients required treatment.
Local Residents Joined Rescue Efforts
The collision triggered an immediate rescue response.
Local residents reportedly reached the victims before or alongside emergency services and helped passengers trapped in and around the damaged bus. Police, district administration officials, medical teams and ambulances subsequently arrived and continued rescue operations.
Authorities also checked the bus to ensure that no passengers remained trapped.
According to Rewa Collector and District Magistrate Narendra Kumar Suryavanshi, administrative officials, medical teams, police personnel, local villagers and public representatives were involved in the response.
Madhya Pradesh Government Announces Compensation
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed grief over the loss of life and announced financial assistance for the affected families.
The state government directed that ₹2 lakh each be provided to the families of those killed, while ₹1 lakh each would be provided to those seriously injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
What Caused the Accident?
The precise cause of the crash has not yet been officially established. Some reports and eyewitness accounts have raised questions about speed and road conditions, including reports of a rain-slicked road. However, police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
For that reason, it would be premature to state that speeding, rainfall or driver error definitively caused the accident. What has been confirmed is that the passenger bus and truck collided on NH-39 near Badwar, after which the bus went off the road and the truck also overturned.
