Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar and Yami Gautam’s Nayyi Navelli Set for a Dussehra Box Office Clash on October 16

Must read

The Dussehra weekend in Bollywood is expected to be very busy. Rajkummar Rao’s courtroom drama Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam and Yami Gautam’s fantasy comedy Nayyi Navelli are both scheduled to be released on October 16, 2026, which is a few days before the Dussehra celebrations on October 20.

The competition is increased by the fact that the two films will also be shown over the weekend alongside Jailer 2, which opens one day earlier on October 15, thus creating a three-way contest for viewership and screening time during one of the year’s major festive periods.

Prahaar: A Real-Life Courtroom Drama

Prahaar tells the story of Ujjwal Nikam, one of India’s best-known public prosecutors, who has handled some of the nation’s most high-profile criminal trials. Rajkummar Rao plays the role of Nikam, and the trailer focuses on the prosecutor’s conduct during the trial relating to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, including the prosecution of Ajmal Kasab.

The film is directed by Avinash Arun and is produced by Dinesh Vijan through the Maddock Films company; Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Sikander Kher have key roles as part of the supporting cast, together with Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Smita Tambe.

Prahaar was not meant to be released on this date; the film was originally scheduled for August 2026 before being postponed to its current date of October 16, a change that now places it right in the middle of the festive-season rush.

The fact that the trailer launch event had extra significance is that both Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ujjwal Nikam himself were there, alongside Rajkummar Rao and the film’s team, giving the courtroom drama a rather special level of real-world credibility before its release.

Nayyi Navelli: A Fantasy Family Entertainer

While Prahaar has a serious and procedural style, Nayyi Navelli takes a different approach. The film is described as a fantasy family entertainer that combines comedy, suspicion and the supernatural, and tells the story of a family who appears to be perfect but whose relationships gradually break down into chaos.

Yami Gautam stars in the film, which is directed by Balaji Mohan and has a screenplay written by Himanshu Sharma and Divy Nidhi Sharma. The fact that this project represents Amazon MGM Studios’ first such collaboration is a point the studio has emphasized as it seeks to expand its presence in the Hindi theatrical market.

Why This Clash Matters

Festive-weekend clashes are nothing new in Bollywood, but this particular selection stands out because the films are so differently positioned. Prahaar is a serious, true-event-based courtroom drama intended for audiences who prefer procedural intensity and real history, while Nayyi Navelli is explicitly presented as lighter, genre-blending family entertainment based on fantasy and comedy.

That contrast might in fact benefit both films rather than harm them since Prahaar and Nayyi Navelli are likely to attract different audiences even when they are released on the same weekend, a situation which is all the more significant because Jailer 2 is also showing at the same time, being a major pan-India action film with its own particular fan base.

What to Watch For

At the time of writing, with less than two weeks remaining until the films’ release, promotional efforts for both movies are due to increase. In the case of Prahaar, there will be a continued focus on its connection with real life and on Rajkummar Rao becoming a publicly recognizable figure, a strategy which has already been put into motion by the trailer launch event featuring Ujjwal Nikam and the Maharashtra CM.

For Nayyi Navelli the marketing campaign will probably make use of the fantasy-comedy style and the fact that this is Yami Gautam’s first project with Amazon MGM Studios, presenting the film as a more light-hearted alternative to both Prahaar’s intensity and Jailer 2’s action-oriented spectacle.

No matter how audiences divide themselves over their festive weekend viewing, October 16 looks like one of the more competitive single-day releases in Bollywood’s 2026 schedule, reminding us that the Dussehra weekend remains one of the most valuable periods for film releases.
